Walk Into The Sunset
As I walk into the sunset
And reflect on the life gone by,
There are moments that are treasured
Many a low and highs.
As I walk into the sunset
And think of the roles I’ve played,
A daughter first and then a friend
Honest and not easily swayed.
Friends I made aplenty
Some stayed and some lost along the way,
Each dear to my heart and remembered
In their very special way.
Losing a parent in my early teens
I set myself a goal which seemed farfetched indeed.
I had to join the Navy
as that’s where Dad had been,
I donned the white uniform
with a sense of purpose and duty
I was sure that Dad watching from above
would be proud at my sense of loyalty.
As I walk into the sunset
and on my judgements I reflect,
What a misplaced sense of duty as
He was long gone and it wouldn’t matter to him I suspect.
The roles of wife and mother came upon me soon
I enjoyed these too, for to me both men were a boon.
I still put my career first for I was yet naïve
I hadn’t yet learnt all my lessons in life.
As I walk into the sunset
And think of what I should like changed,
I wish I’d given my son more time
That’s my one and only bane.
As I walk into the sunset,
I heave a sigh of contentment
For a life lived right
with purpose and commitment
Before the sun goes down
I am glad to have learnt
That above the sense of duty and loyalty
It’s important to find your hearth
Where you now live for yourself and yours
With a smile on your face and joy in your heart
